Fundraising Lesson: A Tale of Two Haircuts

It was the best of days, it was the worst of days.  It was haircut day and I made a bad choice.

I went to one of those cheap places to try to save a little money by getting a cheap haircut.  Guess what happened?  I got a cheap haircut.  I should have known better.  I knew it was risky, but I thought it would be okay.  But it wasn’t.  It was a nightmare.  In fact, it as so bad that I had to get a second haircut to fix the first one.  Instead of saving money, I wound up paying nearly twice what I should have.  And now I have a MUCH shorter cut than I wanted.

What’s the fundraising lesson here?  You get what you pay for.  If you decide to take the cheap route with your fundraising efforts this year to save a little money, it may well backfire on you and give you cheap results.   Can you afford cheap results this year?

I recommend you invest in the best fundraising strategies you can afford.  I’ll certainly never scrimp on a haircut again!

Excellent point. Funny and absolutely right on!

  2. My sister’s a hairdresser, and she once gave a speech called, Surving a Bad Haircut. I remember her final words, “If all else fails, remember, it will grow out!” Good luck with that, I’m sorry to hear it.

Thanks for following me on Twitter: I’m glad to connect to another fundraiser.

I can’t WAIT to see your new “do.” I bet it looks great.

And you are so right about getting what you pay for. I’m the biggest penny-pincher around, but I’m learning quickly that it’s better to pay a little more for quality and have it done correctly in the beginning.
